How to Make the Most of Your Mornings

What do you think about when you first wake up?

Besides hooking into a caffeine IV, that is. 😉

But all jokes aside, this moment is a special opportunity to set the tone for your entire day.

Because during those first precious minutes, your mind is very receptive to influence.

You Can Take Control

There’s an old traditional saying…

“The mind takes its shape from whatever it rests upon.”

Sadly, the default for many in this crazy, busy world, is to rest on plans and worries, and all the things to get done that day.

So why not purposefully influence your mind and rest it on something more positive instead?

How Do I Do That?

When you first wake up, turn your thoughts immediately to things that will improve your well-being.

It might take a few mornings to remember, so it’s helpful to write a reminder the night before.

Food for First Thought

When you awaken, begin recounting the blessings in your life.

Big and small.

Because gratitude creates emotions like love, joy and contentment.

And I don’t need to convince you that’s better than stress, agitation and anxiety. 🙂

What the Dalai Lama Does

Or tune into the present moment and motivate yourself for the day to come.

For example, when the Dalai Lama opens his eyes, he recites…

… “I am fortunate to be alive. I have a precious human life, and I am not going to waste it. I am going to use all my energies to develop myself.”

Now that’s motivation.

What’s Your Purpose

And one of the greatest motivators in life is having a sense of purpose.

Something in service of a cause larger than yourself or making a contribution in your own world.

The interesting thing is, feeling your life has purpose and meaning not only makes you feel alive, it also keeps you alive.

Researchers in Japan did a 7-year study of over 43,000 adults age 40 to 79 asking if they had “ikigai” (a Japanese term for “meaning in life”) and then tracked their health.

People with ikigai were much more likely to be alive 7 years later.

So think about the contribution you want to make each day and step into life with purpose.
